Lip Neutralization & Colour Corrections

What is Neutralization?

In 2024, lip shape, colour and definition are all the rage. Beauty standards have always appreciated beautiful pink lips and characterized them as attractive and tempting. So, it is easy to understand why people may be searching for a way to enhance their own lip colour.

Before and After...

Not everyone has naturally red or subtly pink lips. Melanin-rich skin and hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation can be the reason behind darker or paler sets of lips. Sometimes, skin disorders, over exposure of sun light or hereditary factors can be the cause of discoloration.

Lip Neutralization Treatment is a method by which people can achieve lighter, brighter, or even-toned lips. This procedure also defines the outlines of the mouth for a naturally fuller appearance.

In the context of colour, neutralization refers to the process of balancing or counteracting unwanted colours in order to achieve a more neutral or balanced appearance. This is often done by mixing complementary colours.

The colour wheel is a useful tool in understanding colour relationships. Complementary colours are pairs of colours that, when combined, cancel each other out. When complementary colours are mixed they tend to produce a neutral colour.

In the world of pigments and paints, the colour wheel is also used. For instance, if you have too much Purple in a lip tone, you can add yellow to neutralize it.

Every individual lip tone is unique- people have their own skin type, colour, preferences, and history. Consequently, the approach to permanent makeup for darker lips is a customized procedure that requires suitably qualified and experienced technicians to take on procedure of this nature.

The treatment involves gently tattooing pigment into the lip tissue in layers to alter their colour. This process also emphasizes the shape and size of the lips for an enhanced appearance. It can help to provide symmetry to the natural lip shape of the client.

How does it work?

In the dark lip neutralization treatment, pigments of different shades are gently tattooed onto the lips. Colours chosen depend on the natural colour of the lip and will be carefully selected by your technician,

There is no definitive way to predetermine the final colour accurately, a particular shade cannot be guaranteed by this procedure. Which is why the procedure is carried out over several appointments so we can build and adjust the colour as we go, with the ultimate goal of achieving a Target Colour which will have been discussed during the consultation.

The process does ensure that darker lips are left with a much lighter, brighter, and even-toned. This process can also enhance light coloured lips into a more even peachy, nude or pink sets of lips.

This technique is attracting a lot of attention and is popular among both men and women, as the target colour can be very natural and does not have to have a lip stick effect. It is important to choose an artist that are confident in this treatment as permanent makeup for dark lips is an expert technique that requires skill and knowledge.

Dark Lip Neutralization Treatment Process

Step 1 - Consultation: This is mandatory for the treatment for the following reasons;

  • Your skin & lips can be suitability assessed.
  • You understand the process of appointments and how many treatments are required.
  • You understand the healing process and the aftercare that must be followed thoroughly.
  • So that you understand the benefits and risks of the treatment.
  • So that your expectations can be managed.

Not everyone is suitable for this procedure, which is why we assess you at the consultation.

During the consultation, we will ask about existing skin conditions, trauma, hormonal disorders, etc. Only after thorough assessment can clients book their first appointment for lip blushing.

The procedure may induce post inflammatory hyper- or hypopigmentation. If a person shows evidence of hyperpigmentation (dark uneven spots), the added trauma from this treatment may result in further pigmentation of the lips, and you must understand this risk.

Hypopigmentation causes white (lighter than the skin tone) spots although less common in melanin-rich-skinned individuals. Undergoing colour correction treatment further injures the skin and can create new spots.

Step 2 - Session 1 of lip neutralisation.

  • Ethnic lip blushing is a complex procedure that requires knowledge and experience of colour theory and technique.
  • The main goal in the first procedure is to neutralize the cool tones. This session will help to reduce the darkness of lips by using warm-based pigments.
  • The darker the original colour of the skin, the longer the procedure might take.
  • After the first session of the neutralization process, the healing period can extend anywhere between six to eight weeks, sometimes even more. During these weeks, the pigment colour will start to fade. Just after the procedure, the lips may appear bright. This intensity will remain the same for up to 5-7 days.
  • At approximately two weeks, the brightness from the first neutralization session will begin to fade once the pigment starts to interact with the melanin of the body. The intensity will go down to roughly 60-80%% of what it was initially.
  • The healed result from the first treatment will determine what is carried out in the second treatment. The second session could either be additional naturalization or we can begin to apply the Target Colour.

Step 3 - Session 2 or 3 of Lip Neutralization

Once we have decided if the results are good enough and that the skin has reached a lighter and even colour, then we can begin to blush the lip with the target colour. This can be in session 2 or 3. Subsequent appointments may be necessary depending on how the lips heal after each session.

It is important to note that this procedure cannot guarantee you a definite lip colour.

Pale or lips that have lost their colour often due to age or hormonal factors can also get transformed into natural-looking pairs of beautifully coloured lips. Fading of colour is a common issue faced by many people. Other factors that may cause this are smoking, dietary deficiencies, allergens in lipsticks, dry lips, or continual cold sores can cause this fading. Also the stretching of the skin due to lip fillers also experiences a dull appearance of your natural lip shade.

FAQs on Dark Lip Correction Treatment

1.  How long does the effect of the treatment last?
Permanent makeup for the treatment of Melanin Rich Lips (or pale lips) lasts anywhere between a year and a half to two years or more. Once the colour starts to fade, the client can book a colour boost appointment. Usually this is a single session instead of multiple treatments.

2.  Why does the treatment require multiple sessions?

This procedure may take multiple sessions, depending upon healed results and the number of sessions it takes to neutralize the colour of the skin, before the target colour is applied.

The process cannot be done in a single session as we do not want to cause excessive trauma to the lips. It is important to limit the number of passes or pigment layers not to overwork and permanently damage the skin. Excessive trauma may cause Post Inflammatory Pigmentation or scarring.

3.  How long is the healing period?

The healing process varies from person to person and relies on many different factors, including lifestyle, immune response, the extent of treatment, etc.

In general, an average body takes four to six days to repair the lips outer structure. But the reconstruction of the inner dermal layers may take up to 4 weeks. It may take up to 5 to 6 weeks for the end results after every session. If there is a post inflammatory response, we must allow 8-12 weeks before the next session.

4.  What to expect after the procedure?

Immediately after treatment the lips may be swollen. The pigment will make the lips look much brighter (or darker) than the actual result and can appear like a darker lipstick.  The swelling goes down in under 24 hours after the process is complete. There is a very small risk of bruising.

The lip pigment starts to fade continuously from days 3-5 up to a few weeks post-treatment. In the end, around 60% to 80% of the lip pigment will fade out, leaving behind a softer shade of lip blush.

Lip AfterCare

The lip tattoo aftercare is the routine you have to follow in the days after the lips PMU treatment. It includes cleaning the area regularly, treating it with a healing balm, and avoiding certain activities and products.

The lips go through a recovery cycle as it closes up the micro-wounds. In order for the pigments to settle into the skin, you need to provide it with enough moisture and prevent contamination.
